Thompson Family Teas have been trading since 1896, starting life near Belfast docks, where just a few years later the great liner Titanic was built. Thompson’s Punjana tea fuelled the shipworkers and for the next 50 years the Thompson tea blend was improved to suit the Northern Ireland water, now becoming a staple tea in homes across the country.
For 116 years, only members of the Thompson family have selected teas for their beloved Punjana brand. Ross and David Thompson (cousins) are the third generation of the Thompson family. Then, as now, the family passion has been to create the perfect everyday cuppa. The Guild of Fine Foods has recognised the Thompsons commitment and passion, by awarding the Punjana blend two Gold Stars for three years running in The Great Taste Awards, which is a feat achieved by no other tea bag brand across these islands!
A blend of superior quality can be achieved only by selecting teas from the finest tea gardens, and at a time when the tea bushes are producing their best growth. This happens when sunshine and rainfall are in perfect harmony and it is at this time that the tea leaves grow more slowly and produce a finer taste and flavour. Furthermore, we source these tea leaves from world-renowned gardens in Assam and Kenya. These leaves are highly prized and command a higher price. These are the leaves which find their way into Punjana packs.
More recently The Thompsons have extended their product range to include speciality teas such as Green tea, Earl Grey , Peppermint and Camomile. The latest addition to the Thompson Family range, the “ Thompson’s Titanic Tea”, marking the centenary of the great ship, which graces the shelves of the new Titanic Signature Building in Belfast. So The Thompsons have come full circle in a journey which started over a hundred years ago returning their teas to the origin of where the company was founded by Robert .S. Thompson.
